What happens when we go dark in America?

Coming to an America freeway very soon

Over the last two days close to 700 million people in India have been sitting in the dark as the largest power grid failure in history continues to grip a country of 1.2 billion people.  Just in case you needed to gain some perspective we have a TOTAL population of about 320 million here in America.  I have been searching for reasons for this catastrophe of technology, government and it’s “commitment to public safety”, and let me say it is hard to get to any facts because government is never able to say it is the problem.

Here is a quote from the WSJ Online:

The outage highlighted another problem that policy makers must address: Some states are drawing more power from the national grid than they have indicated they will use in the daily forecasts they provide to the government. Officials said they’re investigating whether such overdraws were responsible for initiating the cascading outages. Although states are fined when they don’t stick to their plans, experts say the penalties aren’t a deterrent. “The penalties need to go up—they aren’t sufficient to stop this undisciplined behavior,” said Kameswara Rao, head of the power and utilities practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers India.

Rabindra Nath Nayak, chairman of state-run Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd., said it would take some time for the government to ascertain the reason for the power failure. The panel investigating the incident is expected to turn in its report in two weeks. Mr. Nayak said “tripping at several interconnectivity points of the [northern] grid could have had a cascading effect”.

CAN WE SAY FUKUSHIMA?

Just as in the nuclear meltdown of Fukushima in Japan March 2011, the same comments are coming out from government officials, and those responsible for the power generation, basically it is someone else’s fault and we will give you a report in a few weeks of what we find out.  Just like in Fukushima all the officials knew the meltdowns were taking place within 48 hours of the initial event but decided to not admit or tell the public until 6 MONTHS LATER.

Pictures are worth a thousand words:

Imagine Mass Transit in America grinding to a halt.

What could make you think that America’s power grid is any more reliable than India’s?  Oh yes of course remember California’s rolling brown and blackouts in 2000, or how about the entire east coast going dark for 12 hours after one small transformer overloaded in Ohio in 2003.  Perhaps you have not seen that over 100 coal plants have been or are in the process of being shut down in 2012 reducing the total Megawatts of power available by over 10,000.  I challenge anyone to research how many “super” transformers it takes to keep our grid up and running every day, and how many backup’s we have as well as where they are constructed.

Solar storms, “terrorism”, or someone just pushing the wrong button at a nuclear plant.  How long before America turns back into the early 1800′s?  Perhaps the better question is are you ready?
