Hope to Homeless in one year
July 31st, 2011 | 1 Comment
As I sat on the park bench, (or what use to be a park), I was amazed to see the line of people. It stretched for at least a mile. I was somewhere in the middle. My wife was next to me, her gaunt face looking toward the west. It is hard to see her wearing tattered clothes, and looking so tired. Our two children laid on the blanket, spread out on the grass. Both of them wearing their very worn Adidas shoes, tank tops, and jeans.
It was one year ago that I had a job, was able to put food on our table, and support my family. I knew that the politics and economics of our country was getting bad, but I had no ability to see the truth. Over the last year, I lost my job as almost every restaurant began closing when food inflation skyrocketed, not to mention $7.00/gallon gas. I applied for unemployment. I received about $600.00 month, which could not even cover feeding us. I remember trying to pull out my IRA savings. I was told that no one was allowed to withdraw their retirement funds anymore, some new law they had passed. How would I ever use my retirement savings if I can’t feed myself or my family I thought. The unemployment checks just stopped after three months. They sent a letter in place of the check, stating that they had no more money to pay unemployment and that we should seek assistance elsewhere. I tried the Social Security administration to maybe claim disability. Heck after turning in a thousands resumes maybe I was disabled. That was denied. I sold my car, all our furniture, which gave us a few more months of rent and food. While all this went on I just kept listening to the news talk about an economic recovery, and that everything would be alright.
I think the turning point for me was when I took a bus down to the city to visit a friend. I remember seeing the roads empty; at 5:00pm; on a Monday night, no trucks, no commute traffic, just a few cars, and the bus I was in. How could the TV, and newspapers, and politicians keep telling us everything is okay, when there wasn’t even people commuting to their jobs anymore. That turning point help provide me acceptance. Acceptance that my government lies to me and that the news people were nothing more than paid spokesman for them. However this did not help me when I received a 3 day notice to vacate my apartment.
As I was walking the neighborhood the day before I moved out, I remember seeing a large semi truck drive by me, it had the Department of Homeland Security logo on it. I could see all kinds of listening devices and cameras mounted on it, I heard a message coming from its loudspeaker;
The Department of Homeland Security wants to remind you a curfew is in place for every American between the hours of 9PM and 7am in which you can not be on the streets. During the hours you are allowed out of your homes you may NOT speak any negative comments or suggest to any other person that there is something wrong with the country. You must only speak positive about the government, its agents, the president, and above all when discussing the economy only talk about the recovery we are in. Violators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, have a nice day.
The feeling of homelessness does not hit you until you are about to be homeless. For 20 years I worked my butt off, saying money for a good retirement, buying a house, providing for my family, doing what I was told was the American dream. Now I am a homeless person that does not even want government assistance, I just want to be able to survive, and they are fighting against me to do that. As we put our final possessions in the car which was now our home my wife showed me a headline in the paper, “Felony if found sleeping in car”. Gosh, can it get worse I said to myself, as I opened up my mailbox. In it was a letter from the IRS. It stated that as a condition to be a citizen of the United States I must have health insurance. They found that I had no coverage for me or my family, and were billing me $600.00 per month for the past 15 months for a total amount due of $9,000.00. Interest and penalties would accrue going forward of 15% interest and $120.00 penalty per month until paid. It also had on the bottom of the page in small print a sentence that read:
If we do not receive payments due within 60 days the IRS is authorized to seize all your assets including your retirement funds in a 401k, IRA’s or other similar accounts. These charges can not be dismissed by any means including Bankruptcy, have a nice day.
It was now a crime to not have a home, health insurance, or speak freely in America.
God Help US ALL.
